SUMMARY:Critical Masculinity Reading group
DESCRIPTION:On February 10th\, we will host the next session of our Critical Masculinity Reading Group. \n\n\n\nWhile we normally like to meet in person at the aequa Community Centre in Wedding\, due to social distancing rules we’re hosting our meetings online for the time being. Please register at the link below before 18:30 if you want to join us. We will e-mail you the login around 15-30 minutes before the meeting starts\, so keep in mind to check your inbox. https://airtable.com/shr57PTnic2g9Ylot \n\n\n\nAt our next meeting\, we will be discussing Jared Sexton’s book ‘The Man They Wanted Me To Be’ (prologue + chapters 1-6)\, but don’t worry if you haven’t read that much (or any) of the book\, you’ll still be welcome in the discussion. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be in English. Please let us know if you have any needs in regards to the accessibility of the book. We’re glad to help! \n\n\n\n__ \n\n\n\nEvent info from the organisers: \n\n\n\nIn this group\, we want to reflect on the social construction of masculinity\, and how it can be improved. We want to create a space to reflect on our experiences of our own masculinity. \n\n\n\nMasculinity is a complex concept with a huge influence on people’s lives. It affects identities\, relationships\, mental health and overall wellbeing. One’s masculinity can be harmful to others\, becoming a source of oppression\, aggression and bullying. It can also be harmful to the masculine individual themself\, limiting their emotional development and ability to properly connect with the people they care about. Critically reflecting on one’s masculinity can help reduce the damage this social construct inflicts\, while also paving a way toward greater happiness and self-realisation. \n\n\n\nThere are people who grapple with their own masculinity and who ask themselves what being masculine means for them. Looking for answers on the internet\, one easily encounters movements such as the “manosphere” or “red pill\,” which promote misogyny and are breeding grounds for the alt-right. Their terms\, such as “beta male\,” have become part of everyday language. We don’t want to give these groups the power to promote their harmful interpretation of masculinity. We see the Critical Masculinity Reading Group as an opportunity to build and promote a positive\, 21st century interpretation of masculinity through our discussions. \n\n\n\nWith this group\, we are trying out something we haven’t done before. It’s our first experience running a group like this and we rely on your help\, mindset and input. \n\n\n\n__ \n\n\n\nIn our first meeting\, we made a decision together that we will not tolerate racism\, cis-sexism\, ableism\, ageism\, classism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, xenophobia or other hateful opinions or behaviours. We avoid making assumptions about others in the group and while sharing our experiences we strive to respond with care and empathy.

SUMMARY:MOSAIC: Illustrations and conversations on the relationships between future\, ritual and memory
DESCRIPTION:GET YOUR TICKET (From zero to 15 EUR – pay what you can) \n\n\n\nMOSAIC is an exhibition exploring the meanings of — and relationships between — memory\, ritual and future\, featuring original works of illustration by 18 BIPOC\, migrant and diasporic artists. The collection has been curated by OUSA Collective for permanent display at the aequa Community Centre in Wedding. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Berlin\, a city of transplants\, it can be hard for those of us with roots sprouted elsewhere to feel belonging. Sometimes that feeling springs from shared memories\, from our shared sensory connections to histories or cultures we have come from. Sometimes it appears in shared rituals of celebration\, spirituality\, healing and commemoration. Often\, despite our differences of experience\, it’s our dreams of a shared future that bind us. \n\n\n\nShared space can be critical to discovering these connections. Spaces in which we can be our most authentic selves offer us a sanctuary — places to recharge from a world that so often drains us. There\, we can explore the relationship between ourselves as singular individuals and our roles as pieces of a complex\, constantly-expanding composite — a mosaic of our experiences and perspectives. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday\, January 24th for MOSAIC\, a digital vernissage\, including introductions of the works by the artists themselves\, as well as community discussions\, workshops and a musical performance around the themes that inspired these works. Like most aequa gatherings\, this one will be grounded in conversation\, so please join us to add pieces of your story to the picture\, too. \n\n\n\nFeatured illustrations from: \n\n\n\nAlexis Jang \n\n\n\nAna Filipa Maceira \n\n\n\nAude Nasr \n\n\n\nBilge Emir \n\n\n\nChiny Udeani \n\n\n\nChristina S. You can pay all at once or in four installments of €29.00. The ticket prices go towards paying for our platform\, facilitators and design time. SUMMARY:Discussion Circle: Me & White Supremacy Workbook
DESCRIPTION:[doors open at 6.15\, event starts at 6.30]\n\n\n\nIf you are someone who might benefit from white privilege — if you’re not sure\, this might be a good way to find out — we encourage you to take the month of June to read and reflect on the prompts of Layla F. Saad’s “Me & White Supremacy” and explore the ways in which whiteness plays out in your own life. \n\n\n\nSIGNUP HERE: https://airtable.com/shr8ur6lnxwkRUa2i \n\n\n\nFrom the book’s website: “*Me and White Supremacy: A 28-Day Challenge to Combat Racism\, Change the World\, and Become a Good Ancestor* leads readers through a journey of understanding their white privilege and participation in white supremacy\, so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on black\, indigenous and people of color\, and in turn\, help other white people do better\, too. The book goes beyond the original workbook by adding more historical and cultural contexts\, sharing moving stories and anecdotes\, and includes expanded definitions\, examples\, and further resources.” \n\n\n\nThis group will give folks who have COMPLETED the workbook a place to discuss what they learned over the course of that month\, talk about next steps and share their action and accountability plan. The discussion will be held in English. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be held in English online and limited to 20 participants. \n\n\n\nMUTUAL RESPECT at aequa eventshttps://aequa.cc/mutual-respect/

SUMMARY:Equity Reading Circle - poetry edition
DESCRIPTION:You can join this meetup in person or via online video. The Equity Reading Circle is a reading\, discussion and action group focused on readings about or related to intersectional feminism\, equality/equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and/or readings from authors from minority\, marginalised or underrepresented groups. \n\n\n\nWe meet every other Wednesday evening at aequa CC in Wedding. The circle is open to everyone who has an open\, collaborative and respectful mindset. The discussions take place in English. \n\n\n\nSince Wednesday\, October 14\, we decided as a group that we would like to focus on quarter on co-reading poetry on these topics. In particular\, we will take our time together to read from Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan’s Postcolonial Banter poetry collection. You can buy the ebook here or watch the author performing many of the poems online. The idea is that each meeting\, someone else will “host” by sharing a poem or poems of their choice\, which the group can then discuss. As previously\, we will adopt some methods of The Circle Way\, to try to share the work of organising this meetup. \n\n\n\nEmail hello [at] aequa.cc if you’d like us to already add your email to the calendar invite.

SUMMARY:Life Architecture part 1
DESCRIPTION:Tickets here: www.universe.com/events/life-architecture-4-part-online-learning-series-tickets-Z3WH49 \n\n\n\nTo build the life you dream of\, start by designing it. And what better time to reassess the lives we want to live than in the midst of this great shake-up? \n\n\n\nThis four-part collaborative learning series is about getting unstuck — to move from where you are now in your life to where you want to be. \n\n\n\nThat could mean one change in your life\, or many in combination — committing yourself to a cause you care about\, finding a new residence\, activating a career change\, seeking a new type of relationship\, going deep on a personal passion\, adding family members like a pet or kiddo\, or just finding more time for yourself and the things and people you care most about. \n\n\n\nEach session is three hours long (with breaks!)\, every Sunday afternoon for four weeks in a row\, made up of reflection activities\, discussions\, food for thought and…yes\, a little bit of homework. \n\n\n\nPRICES AND ACCESS \n\n\n\nSpace is limited to 16 spots. We strongly recommend that you only join if you can commit to all four weeks of the series. \n\n\n\nThe series is open to everyone with a collaborative\, open and respectful mindset. That said\, these gatherings do try to center those who are usually marginalised\, and if the signups get full\, we will prioritise those who might not have access to these kinds of resources otherwise. \n\n\n\nThe cost is €100 plus 16% VAT for the four sessions. You can pay all at once or in four installments of €29.00. The ticket prices go towards paying for our platform\, facilitators and design time. You can choose to pay at once or in four installments. \n\n\n\nThree no-cost spots will be available for those who do not have the financial means to buy a ticket. SUMMARY:Critical Masculinity Reading Group #05
DESCRIPTION:This Wednesday we’re hosting the next edition of our Critical Masculinity Reading Group. While we normally like to meet in person at the aequa Community Centre in Wedding\, due to social distancing rules we’re hosting our meetings online for the time being. Please contact hello@aequa.cc before 18:30 on November 25th if you want the link to join us. The discussion will be in English. \n\n\n\nThis week\, we’ll be discussing the second half of JJ Bola’s “Mask Off: Masculinity Redefined.” Let us know if you’re interested in joining but need help getting the text.__ \n\n\n\nEvent info from the organisers: \n\n\n\nIn this group\, we want to reflect on the social construction of masculinity\, and how it can be improved. Critically reflecting on one’s masculinity can help reduce the damage this social construct inflicts\, while also paving a way toward greater happiness and self-realisation.There are people who grapple with their own masculinity and who ask themselves what being masculine means for them. With this group\, we are trying out something we haven’t done before. It’s our first experience running a group like this and we rely on your help\, mindset and input \n\n\n\n__ \n\n\n\nIn our first meeting\, we made a decision together that we will not tolerate racism\, cis-sexism\, ableism\, ageism\, classism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, xenophobia or other hateful opinions or behaviours. We avoid making assumptions about others in the group and while sharing our experiences we strive to respond with care and empathy. If you can\, please consider supporting aequa on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/aequa

SUMMARY:The Left and the US Presidential Election
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: only a very limited number of places are available at aequa\, but this meeting will be livestreamed \n\n\n\nJoint meeting with DSA Berlin. The Left is offered two unappealing choices in the upcoming US Presidential election: a right-wing authoritarian in Trump and a centrist Democrat in Biden. Is removing Trump from office the primary political imperative? Or should Biden’s record—supporting austerity\, overseas interventions\, and refusing to ban fracking—rule out any left-wing support for him? This meeting will examine the dilemma facing socialists in November\, discuss arguments in favor and against each option\, and explore alternate forms of political action to fight for progressive change after the election. This meeting will be livestreamed\, and there is limited opportunity to view the meeting live. To date\, Book Swap events have raised almost 300€ for Books Beyond Bars UK – a collective of volunteers who send books and other educational materials\, free of charge\, to incarcerated LGBTQIA+ people across the United Kingdom. Check out more about their important work here: https://beyond-bars.org/ \n\n\n\n Access information for the space:The aequa CC is an open community space. We are in the ongoing process of improving accessibility and welcome feedback and suggestions. \n\n\n\nThis is a multi-room and multi-purpose semi-public space. There are usually flowers and plants in the space\, which is used by diverse groups of people and occasionally dogs\, too. Therefore we are unfortunately not able to guarantee a scent- or allergen-free space. \n\n\n\nThe space is **not** wheelchair accessible at this time. We are looking into solutions to make both spaces wheelchair accessible. The main event space is reached via two (2) steps\, each approximately 20 cm tall. Inside\, the restrooms can only be reached only by going down a staircase to the basement level.

SUMMARY:Critical Masculinity Reading Group - #03
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE 13 OCTOBER – \n\n\n\nUnfortunately we need to move tonight’s event online. Please contact hello@aequa.cc before 18:30 on October 13th if you want the link to join us and we’ll send you the link. \n\n\n\n===We will be hosting a group of community members interested in kicking off a Critical Masculinity Reading Group. The event is in English and space is limited due to social distancing requirements. Please register here:https://airtable.com/shr8PcCCoBYD0nruU \n\n\n\nAt our last meeting\, we read the chapters six to eight of The Will To Change: Men\, Masculinity and Love by bell hooks. Until our next meeting on 13 October\, we want to discuss chapters nine to twelve. Please let us know if you have any needs in regards to the accessibility of the book. We’re glad to help! \n\n\n\nDon’t forget to bring your mask for moving inside the Aequa space. \n\n\n\n__ \n\n\n\nEvent info from the organisers:In this group\, we want to reflect on the social construction of masculinity\, and how it can be improved. We want to create a space to reflect on our experiences of our own masculinity.Masculinity is a complex concept with a huge influence on people’s lives. Critically reflecting on one’s masculinity can help reduce the damage this social construct inflicts\, while also paving a way toward greater happiness and self-realisation.There are people who grapple with their own masculinity and who ask themselves what being masculine means for them. With this group\, we are trying out something we haven’t done before. We avoid making assumptions about others in the group and while sharing our experiences we strive to respond with care and empathy.VENUE INFO:This event will take place at aequa Community Centre. \n\n\n\nFind out more about the space here:https://aequa.cc/And access information is here:https://aequa.cc/access/

SUMMARY:Designer Peer Support Group - Finding Inspiration ✨
DESCRIPTION:Tired of endless hours of sifting through images on pinterest\, google\, behance\, etc.\, feeling your eyeballs slowly turning into glowing rectangles? Take a break & meet with other designers to discuss alternative ways of getting inspired by the world around us. Discover methods for catching the “big fish”! \n\n\n\nThis will be our second meeting of the Designer’s Peer Support Group (PSG)\, held in English only for now. In July’s kickoff meeting we discussed shared challenges\, one of which was finding inspiration. New people are of course welcome. Sign up here: https://airtable.com/shrEiQAhxp9bKf7CN \n\n\n\naequa Peer Support Groups give folks with certain affinities (for example\, similar interests\, challenges or experiences) the chance to offer mutual support in the form of peer-to-peer mentorship\, feedback\, advice and discussion. This also gives a forum to wrestle with how those with shared challenges or advantages can help to build a more equitable future for all. \n\n\n\nWe envision this Designer PSG as a decentralised crew that can support each other through: \n\n\n\n Asking for/getting feedback on designs\, prototypes/drafts or design opportunities \n\n\n\n Sharing design resources\, like a free icon set or online courses\, for example \n\n\n\n Starting a design book club — for example\, reading Design Justice (https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/design-justice) \n\n\n\n Attending design meetups or conferences together \n\n\n\n Hosting workshops or webinars on a design-related topic to share knowledge \n\n\n\nFor those who are interested\, graphic designers in this group can also opt to support aequa’s work by taking on pro-bono design tasks. This is not a requirement to join the group. \n\n\n\nPlease bring your mask with you!   \n\n\n\nWe have a Trust Till (Kasse des Vertrauens) at the place as well\, where you can buy some snacks. \n\n\n\nAre you interested in joining us? Sign up here:https://airtable.com/shrEiQAhxp9bKf7CNWe’ll meet in the (lower level) lounge of aequa Community Centre.
